Mychal Thompson admitted he had hoped to see his son Klay Thompson be part of the Los Angeles Lakers earlier than the veteran sharpshooter in the end signed with the Miami Warmth.
Klay agreed to a two-year, $11.5 million contract with Miami earlier this week.
His father, a former Lakers participant and longtime radio analyst for the franchise, revealed that his makes an attempt to steer Klay towards Los Angeles by no means carried a lot weight.
“What sort of affect do I’ve on [Klay’s] opinion? Isn’t it apparent? None! I wished him to be [on the] Lakers. I assumed the Lakers can be excellent for him the final three years,” Mychal stated.
Mychal believes Klay may have succeeded with both staff, pointing to how his capturing would have complemented the Lakers’ present core.
“Very related match; it have been excellent on both [team]. He match completely right here with Luka [Dončić], and Austin Reaves, and Walker Kessler, and the skin capturing the Lakers want, the skin capturing that Luka Dončić likes to have round him. However it’s the very same of excellent slot in Miami too.”
It was not the primary time Mychal wished his son in a Lakers uniform. When Klay left Golden State in 2024, Los Angeles pursued him earlier than he as an alternative signed a three-year, $50 million contract with Dallas.
“I wished him to be [on the] Lakers; I assumed the Lakers can be excellent for him the final three years, particularly when he grew to become a free agent a couple of years in the past, when the Lakers are pursuing him closely,” Mychal stated. “I assumed he’d be excellent on the time to staff up with LeBron and Anthony Davis to supply that exterior capturing, together with Austin Reaves, that we wanted.”
Requested why his pitches have repeatedly failed, Mychal provided a humorous rationalization linked to his job touring with the Lakers.
“The one factor I may work out is, since I work for the Lakers, and I journey with the Lakers, I assume he simply don’t need to be on the highway with me, in [the] resort,” Mychal stated.
“He don’t need me knocking on his door to be checking on curfew, be sure that he’s there. So I assume that’s why [he] figured, ‘I’m not going there to have my dad comply with me on the highway!’”
