Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes could be on track to return to the field sooner than expected.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach told SiriusXM on Monday morning that Mahomes’ rehab is well ahead of schedule. The strong progress puts Mahomes in a position to potentially take part in portions of the team’s offseason workout program if his recovery continues without setbacks.

“He’s way ahead of schedule,” Veach said. “I think the biggest challenge that we’re going to have is protecting [Mahomes] towards himself as a result of I’m certain after we get to St. Joseph, Missouri, for coaching camp, he’s going to wish to be a full-go.”

Mahomes is recovering from ACL and LCL tears in his left knee, which he suffered final December within the Chiefs’ Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Whereas the everyday restoration timeline is 9 to 12 months, his present progress places him on monitor to probably return for coaching camp, if not sooner.

“It’s been actually inspiring,” Veach mentioned. “I’ve been there earlier than with Pat when he had that dislocated knee and labored his tail off to return again in three weeks. I knew this bump within the street wouldn’t sluggish him down in any respect.”

Even with Mahomes seemingly forward of schedule, Veach targeted on defending him from himself all through the rehab course of. As a lot as getting him again on the sector would offer a lift, the group stays targeted on a cautious, long-term method fairly than dashing his return.

“We’re going to have to carry him again a bit,” Veach mentioned. “I don’t wish to put a timetable on it, however I feel you understand the kind of individual and competitor Pat [Mahomes] is. I’d simply say that we’re in a fairly good place proper now.

Whereas the group stays dedicated to a cautious timeline, Mahomes’ speedy restoration is shortly making a return to coaching camp a sensible risk. The main focus now could be much less on the knee itself and extra on managing his aggressive drive to make sure he’s absolutely cleared earlier than returning.
