Imai, 27, was one in all a handful of proficient gamers from the NPB to be obtainable on the free agent market this winter,

Houston signed Imai to a three-year contract, which might max out at $63 million, in keeping with The Athletic’s Chandler Rome. Rome notes that Imai has the second-highest common annual worth amongst Japanese-born gamers, along with his compatriot and World Sequence Champion Yoshinobu Yamamoto (12-year, $325 million) being the very best.

Imai is coming off one in all his greatest seasons within the NPB, going 10-5 with a 1.92 ERA in 24 games and putting out 178 batters in 163.2 innings. The one challenge with Imai, which led some groups to hesitate to signal him, was his walks: a profession BB/9 of 4.4.
