Jaguars Acquire QB Quinn Ewers In Trade With Dolphins

The Jacksonville Jaguars added to their quarterback room on Saturday as they acquired Quinn Ewers in a trade with the Miami Dolphins.

Jacksonville sent a sixth-round pick to Miami to complete the deal.

The prize for the Jaguars, Ewers, brings starting NFL experience and a decorated college career to Duval County. In 2025, Ewers started three games for the Dolphins once the franchise was eliminated from playoff contention and decided to bench starter Tua Tagovailoa. He completed 66.3% of his passing attempts for 622 yards and three touchdowns.

The Dolphins selected Ewers in the 7th round of the 2025 NFL Draft following a trip to the College Football Playoff semifinals with Texas in 2024. Ewers led the SEC with 31 passing touchdowns, and boosted the Longhorns to victories over Clemson and Arizona State in the CFP, before losing to the eventual-champions, Ohio State.

He helped Texas reach the CFP semifinals in 2023, as well.

Ewers appeared in Miami’s first preseason game against Washington, but sustained a groin injury and has been sidelined since.

Seemingly, Jacksonville saw enough in his 2025 regular-season tape. Despite acquiring Ewers, Jacksonville’s hope is not to deploy him in the same inconsequential situation Miami did last season. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars are looking to improve on a 13-4 season in Year 1 with head coach Liam Coen. Bringing in Ewers gives them an added layer of security at the NFL’s most important position, so that if he were called upon to start, he could help the team continue to contend.

He joins a QB room that includes Lawrence and veteran Nick Mullens, and Ewers will be on track to be Lawrence’s direct backup. Miami, on the other hand, boasts a quarterback room including Malik Willis, Cam Miller and rookie Mark Gronowski.

Jacksonville opens the NFL season hosting the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, Sept. 13, while the Dolphins play the Las Vegas Raiders.
